Last day of April 2010:

Not too many months back we were sitting, stuck in an ice-jammed river. Opinion was that water had never before frozen, and would therefore, never loosen nor release. We were intoned to abandon our boat, which had been pointed towards our dreams on this narrow tributary, lest we never cross and make safe passage to something else, for it was the end of days.

Well, let the days come. The place we’re vying for is not the other side. It’s here, as better people, on this boat of intent in the middle of this beautiful channel. Grab your canoe. The thaw has started, the sun is peeking through. The ice, it is breaking, and the water, it is quickening. Pay fair mind to the eddies and the waterfalls and the slicks. They are merely tricks of physics that, if approached carefully, well roll under the boat. Pessimism, like physics, can be daunting — but we won’t let that stop us from good and determined intent.

Please join us as we determinedly enjoy the current season that is flowing. We’d love to see you at the winery this Memorial weekend or this summer, or send you some good intentions in bottle form.

Best regards,

Jim Prosser
Owner/winemaker/paddler

New Releases
jkc 2009 Glass Willamette Valley White Pinot Noir
The crack is back! Yes, the 2009 Glass rosé of Pinot is once again on the shelf. It’s Jim’s mission to show that summer wine can be amazing, and this summer lip-smacker hurls mouthwatering lime and weighty grapefruit from an exceedingly long, complex palate after a nose that teases with fragrant lime, sweet honeysuckle and Smarties (yes, from your childhood). You know what happens if you wait. $20 ($18 case/club). Read the tasting notes. Order

jkc
2008 Provocateur Pinot Noir
The Provocateur blend is always the first out of the gate of our releases for any given vintage year, and for the heralded Oregon 2008 vintage, Provocateur is sending the crowd into a frenzy. The garnet color matches with an intensely concentrated nose of dark cherry, ripe blackberry, cinnamon, agave, persimmon and Mexican hot chocolate. The palate is full, ripe, and carried on a round and persistent core of fresh acidity that goes on and on. I think Grandpa J.K., who speaks from the back label in this redesigned version, would recommend stocking the cellar. $24 ($21 case/club price). Read the tasting notes. Order

jkc Also available

jkc What else is new?
The crazy wheels just keep turning. Here's what's been on our plate the past few months.

There's something intrinsically satisfying about bottling. The days begin with large fermentors brimming with finished wine and end with neatly stacked and wrapped pallets of cases, ready to go to market. The concrete-weary feet and sore shoulders remind us that a day of honest work spent out of a computer chair is good for both the body and the soul.

Our long-term 'landscaping' project took another step forward this month with the planting of a few more acres of Pinot Noir vineyard. Vineyard planting is like lining up a huge marching band playing an anthem to the sun. It starts with transits and a few thousand Popsicle sticks, and ends with steel and grow tubes sounding a singular green note from a 2.5-acre, veritable 4,000-strong, Wadenswil horn section that won't be heard from for three years.

The deer in the back 40 won't have much longer to prune the vineyard with impunity (a buck likes the view from the mound on top of the winery caves ... I think he enjoys seeing the steam come out of Jim's ears). We are in the midst of clearing the fenceline and installing a mile-long deer fence around our 40 acres.

Not many would classify J.K. Carriere as as the video/multimedia types , but we still keeping a few tricks up our sleeve and hope to spring those on you, or a screen close to you, soon. Hollywood, Bollywood, our own woods ... whatever.
